OSCE

What is OSCE?

OSCE is the second part of the Test of Competence for nurses and mid-wives in UK, where they will primary be tested on their clinical and communication skills. Candidate must pass the OSCE-C1 test in order to be registered as a professional. The OSCE is designed to assess your ability to competently apply your professional midwifery skills and knowledge in the UK. It is set at the level expected of midwives as they enter the profession at the point of registration.

OSCE Structure

The OSCE comprises 10 stations, with a total testing time of about 2.5 hours. Four stations will be scenariobased and will relate to four stages of the midwifery care process:

Assessment - The assessment station is a place to gather information about the patient’s general state of health, current problems and their goals. As the nursing practitioner gathers this information, they will make important observations about your person that can be used to develop treatment plans.

Planning - The basis of planning involves identifying the key elements of care that you want to address, such as your goals and psychiatric symptoms. Next, you develop a plan based on those aspects, using a holistic approach that considers how well patients feel emotionally, physically, and mentally.

Implementation - Identify and use a system that ensures the accurate, timely, and complete recording of patient care activities by clinicians.

Evaluation - All of these are stages of nursing and midwifery care. These include assessment, evaluation, planning and management, implementation, monitoring, and evaluating the outcomes of care. At the practical stations, it is very important that you read the instructions carefully and ask questions if you are unsure of anything.

Four of the six remaining stations will test practical clinical skills. Each of the skills stations will last for up to 20 minutes in total.

FEE Details

The fee for the OSCE is £794. The reduced resit fee is £397 if you need to resit 7 or fewer stations.

re-sitting OSCE

You can take the OSCE a maximum of three times as part of your application, but you need to wait at least 10 days between each sitting. If you do not pass your OSCE on your third attempt, your application will close and you’ll need to start a new application if you want to register with us. You must wait at least six months before you sit the OSCE again and retake the 10 stations.
